Home Life, Where Do You Think You Live?

JHERA residents are invited to the OPENING NIGHT!

Thursday 5th September 2024. 6.30pm – 8.30pm.

Shipton Street Gallery, Shipton Street.

Home Life, Where Do You Think You Live, is a photographic project. It’s a celebration of the residents who live and work on the Jesus Hospital Estate in the East End of London. It’s about freezing a moment in time, reflecting the estate as it is at the moment the photo is taken and the image recorded.

The intention is for this body of work to be added to London’s East End archive reflecting a part of the East End’s landscape in terms of its interiors, objects and people.

The inspiration for the project came from an exhibition at the Museum of the Home in 2009. The Exhibition was called ‘Ethelburga Tower: At Home in a high-rise’ by Mark Cowper. Cowper had the idea for the project in 1976 when he was a child and was interested in knowing how the interiors of the houses in his road would be different, depending on the people that lived in them.

In October 2014 the photograph of Betty and Jackie was selected and shown in ‘ARCHIVE: Imagining the East End’ an exhibition at the Cass in Whitechapel showcasing a diverse range of photographers including Don McCullin and Tom Hunter, all of whose work relates to the East End of London.

The project was re-launched in June 2018, with an exhibition at Shipton Street Gallery. In October the photo of Flossie was selected for East London’s Photomonth and in March 2019 ‘Flossie ‘ was selected, as part of Woman’s History Month in Dalston Library.
