WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU LIVE?

Monday 24th March 7.30pm
The Sundial Centre, Shipton Street
(Next to the Nelson’s Head pub)

This is the first of a series of free local history talks open to all residents, businesses and parents of children at Columbia Road School.

Where Do You Think You Live? looks back to the 19th Century, to the establishment of the Jesus Hospital Estate, now commonly known as ‘Jesus Green’.

Come and join us for a drink and an evening of enlightenment and fun, whilst getting to know your neighbours and discovering a little bit more about the ‘East End’ where you live.

Guest speakers for the evening are:

Simon Smith & Jane Porter from The Jesus Hospital Charity, who will give us a potted history of how the Jesus Hospital Estate came into being.

Linda Wilkinson, local resident, historian and author.
Linda’s family have lived on the Jesus Hospital Estate since it was established in the 19th century. Her grandparents met on Baxendale Street where their families were neighbours. Her grandfather William lived at number 34 and her grandmother Alice at number 14. Linda’s parents were bombed out of Baxendale Street in WWII, when they moved to Columbia Road. Linda will be talking about the history of the area and what it was like to grow up in one of the worst slums of the 1950s.

Linda will be selling and signing copies of her recent book Columbia Road.

Stefan Dickers, Library and Archives Manager at Bishopsgate Institute.
Stefan will be discussing the changing face of the East End as documented through the books, maps, archives and other items held in the Library at Bishopsgate Institute.

Stefan looks after the Institute’s extensive collection of books, pamphlets, maps, photographs and oral histories on London history, as well as the labour movement, protest, atheism and the co-op. He is passionate about history, the Institute and its historic collections, and West Ham United and will talk about them at length to anyone who will listen.

The event has been organised by local resident, Marie Sleigh, is supported by JHERA, Jesus Hospital Estate Residents’ Association.
